The Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA) has called on Malawi’s political leaders to shift their attention from internal party disputes and political positioning to the pressing economic challenges facing ordinary citizens.

CAMA says continued political wrangling is taking place against a backdrop of worsening economic pressures, with many Malawians struggling to cope with the rising cost of living, unemployment, business closures and limited access to essential services, including healthcare.

In a statement, the consumer rights organisation said the country urgently needs leadership that is focused on finding practical and sustainable solutions to poverty and economic hardship rather than spending excessive time on political conflicts and internal party affairs.

CAMA argues that political leaders have a responsibility to place the interests and welfare of citizens at the centre of national decision-making, particularly at a time when households and businesses are facing significant financial pressures.

The organisation has also stressed the importance of creating an environment capable of attracting investment, expanding economic opportunities and supporting businesses so that the benefits of economic growth can reach ordinary Malawians.

According to CAMA, national development requires a more coordinated approach from political leaders, with greater attention given to policies and interventions that can improve household incomes, create employment opportunities and strengthen access to basic services.

The concerns come as consumers continue to face pressure from increasing prices of goods and services, which have reduced the purchasing power of many households and made it increasingly difficult for families to meet their basic needs.

Meanwhile, Edwards Kambanje of the Consumer Protection Unit (CoPu) has separately urged government to place national development and consumer welfare higher on its agenda.

Kambanje says authorities should pay particular attention to the rising prices of essential goods and services, warning that continued price increases are placing an additional burden on households already struggling with economic difficulties.

He has called for stronger measures to protect consumers and improve their economic welfare, arguing that national development should ultimately translate into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens.

The calls from CAMA and CoPu come at a time when the debate over Malawi’s economic direction remains central to public discourse. For many citizens, issues such as food prices, employment, access to healthcare, business sustainability and household income are more immediate concerns than political contests within and between political parties.

CAMA’s position therefore places renewed emphasis on the need for political leadership to balance political interests with the broader national interest.

The consumer body says Malawi’s political leaders should demonstrate greater unity and commitment towards addressing poverty, strengthening the economy and creating conditions in which citizens can improve their livelihoods.

The message is ultimately a call for politics to translate into practical governance—where political competition does not overshadow the responsibility to address the everyday economic realities confronting Malawians.

For consumers, the measure of successful leadership is not simply political stability or party strength, but whether government policies can help reduce economic hardship, improve access to essential services, create opportunities and give citizens greater confidence in their economic future.
