Residents of Chadzunda on Saturday moved to demolish a property they suspect had been used as a hideout by people linked to criminal activities, following a recent police operation in the area.
The demolition reportedly involved local residents and traditional leaders who agreed to take action against the property amid growing concerns over activities allegedly taking place at the premises.
According to information gathered by Malawi Freedom Network (MFN), suspicion surrounding the property intensified after police visited the area on Thursday following information from residents that a wanted individual was allegedly being kept at the location.
Police reportedly went to the premises and found a person there, although details surrounding the person’s identity and the circumstances of the discovery have not yet been fully established.
One resident who spoke to MFN said the property owner was not a regular presence in the community and would usually arrive at the property, enter the compound and remain there without engaging much with residents.
The resident said the owner had previously told people who asked about his origins that his home village was in the Lilongwe area.
“What surprised us was that after buying the place, he only stayed there for about two weeks,” the resident said.
According to the resident, the owner also did not clearly explain to the community what activities were being conducted at the property, further contributing to suspicion among some residents.
The decision to demolish the property was reportedly reached after consultations involving community members and traditional leaders.
However, allegations surrounding the property and its owner have not been independently verified by MFN, and it remains unclear whether authorities have formally established that the premises were being used for criminal purposes.
The development comes amid heightened community concern following the recent police operation in Chadzunda.
Residents are now calling for authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the property and establish whether it was connected to any criminal activity.
