Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralization Hon. Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha, MP, has represented President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika at a historic national celebration marking 125 years of Catholic evangelization in Malawi.

The jubilee celebration is taking place today, 19 September 2026, at St. Mary’s (Nzama) Catholic Parish in Ntcheu District, a parish recognised as the first Catholic parish established in Malawi.

Mwanamvekha joined thousands of Catholic faithful, clergy, traditional leaders, government officials and other invited guests at Nzama for the Quasquicentennial Jubilee, commemorating a century and a quarter of the Catholic Church’s presence and evangelization work in the country.

The celebration is being held under the theme:

“Rooted in Christ, Sent for a Mission: Celebrating 125 Years of Evangelization in Malawi.”

The anniversary provides an opportunity for the Catholic community to reflect on the Church’s long history in Malawi, its contribution to evangelization and its continued role in communities across the country.

The presence of the Minister also represents the participation of the Malawi Government in the landmark national religious celebration on behalf of President Mutharika.

Mwanamvekha is accompanied by Principal Secretary for Administration in the Ministry of Finance Mr. Patrick Liphava, Hon. Malowa, Member of Parliament for Nguludi Constituency, Blantyre Deputy Mayor Councillor Gerald Lipikwe, among other dignitaries.

The gathering at Nzama brings together Catholic faithful from different parts of Malawi for a celebration that combines faith, history and reflection on the Church’s 125-year journey in the country.

The 125th anniversary is therefore not only a milestone for the Catholic Church but also a significant moment in Malawi’s religious and social history, as the country reflects on the longstanding contribution of the Church to communities over generations.

The jubilee at Nzama is expected to leave a lasting reminder of the historic beginnings of Catholic evangelization in Malawi and the Church’s continuing mission of faith and service.
