A political message is emerging around Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman, with his supporters arguing that attempts to undermine his leadership should not be viewed as a personal battle, but as a challenge to the institution he represents.
The argument is simple: Parliament exists to represent the interests and concerns of Malawians, and the Speaker occupies a central position in ensuring that the House performs its constitutional responsibilities.
Supporters of Suleman therefore contend that political attacks against the Speaker should not be allowed to distract Parliament from its oversight role, particularly on matters affecting public finances, service delivery and national accountability.
However, criticism of the Speaker remains part of democratic politics, and accountability must apply to every public office holder. The real test is whether disagreements are handled through Parliament’s rules, constitutional processes and evidence rather than personal attacks or political intimidation.
With Malawi’s population now exceeding 19 million, the debate surrounding the Speaker carries significance far beyond one individual. At its heart is a bigger question: Will Parliament remain a strong voice for ordinary Malawians, or will political battles weaken its ability to hold power to account?
For many Malawians, that is the issue that matters most.
