Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has cast his ballot in the country’s 2026 General Election, urging registered voters to turn out in large numbers before polling stations close at 18:00 hours.

After voting, President Hichilema said his ballot was one of millions of votes that would collectively determine the direction Zambia takes over the next five years.

“Five years ago, you placed your trust in us. Today, the decision for the next five years rests where it should, with the people of Zambia,” Hichilema said.

The President encouraged registered voters who had not yet voted to make their way to polling stations before the close of voting, reminding them to carry their green National Registration Cards and voters’ cards.

He also called on citizens to encourage their families, friends and neighbours to participate in the electoral process while maintaining peace and respecting the right of fellow citizens to make their own choices at the ballot box.

Hichilema described voting as a fundamental expression of democracy, saying Zambia’s democratic strength is renewed whenever citizens exercise their constitutional right to choose their leaders.

“Democracy is a strength we renew every time we vote, and today it belongs to every citizen who stands patiently in line to have their say,” he said.

The Head of State further urged Zambians to turn out in “huge numbers”, emphasising the importance of citizen participation in determining the country’s political direction.

He concluded his message by asking for God’s blessings upon the people of Zambia and the nation as the country goes through the electoral process.

Voting in Zambia’s 2026 General Election is expected to continue until 18:00 hours, with citizens choosing leaders at various levels of government.
