Malawi is seeking international technology partnerships that could help reduce the cost of smartphones and digital devices as the government steps up efforts to expand digital access and accelerate the country’s digital transformation.

Minister of Information and Communications Technology Dr Shadric Namalomba is leading a Malawian delegation attending the World Internet Conference (WIC) in Wuzhen, China, where discussions are focusing on internet development, emerging technologies, artificial intelligence and digital governance.

The participation presents Malawi with an opportunity to engage global technology leaders, explore investment opportunities and identify partnerships that could address some of the country’s persistent digital challenges.

One of the delegation’s key priorities is to establish collaborations that could make smartphones and other digital devices more affordable for ordinary Malawians.

Access to affordable devices remains an important part of digital inclusion, particularly as governments, businesses and individuals increasingly depend on internet-based services for communication, education, financial transactions and economic activities.

Namalomba has emphasised that the Wuzhen summit offers a strategic platform for Malawi to exchange knowledge, attract investment and build partnerships capable of supporting the country’s digital ambitions.

Beyond device affordability, the delegation is also looking at international approaches to the responsible development and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The discussions come at a time when AI technology is becoming increasingly influential across different sectors, while its misuse is creating new challenges involving misinformation, digital manipulation and online security.

Malawi is therefore interested in learning from countries with experience in developing appropriate frameworks for ensuring that emerging technologies are used responsibly and in ways that benefit society.

The government also hopes that engagements at the conference will expose Malawi to new ideas and technological developments that could strengthen its digital infrastructure and improve access to modern communication services.

The World Internet Conference, popularly known as the Wuzhen Summit, is an international gathering that brings together government representatives, technology companies, experts and policymakers from more than 50 countries.

Its discussions provide a platform for addressing the future of internet development, technological innovation, cybersecurity and international cooperation in the digital economy.

For Malawi, the significance of the engagement will ultimately depend on whether discussions translate into practical partnerships, investment and solutions that improve the lives of citizens.

Reducing the cost of smartphones, expanding digital access and strengthening safeguards against the misuse of artificial intelligence remain important issues as the country seeks to benefit from the rapidly changing global digital landscape.

The Wuzhen engagement could therefore open new opportunities for Malawi, but its real value will be measured by tangible results beyond the conference.
