The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has been formally deregistered as a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) by the Non-Governmental Organizations Regulatory Authority (NGORA), but the coalition insists the decision will not stop its human rights advocacy or planned demonstrations.
HRDC Chairperson Michael Kaiyatsa confirmed the development in an interview, saying the organisation had received an official letter from NGORA communicating its deregistration.
Kaiyatsa said the coalition is now consulting its lawyers to determine the appropriate legal steps following the regulatory authority’s decision.
He described the development as unsurprising, arguing that NGORA had appeared determined to deregister HRDC regardless of the explanations the coalition had provided.
Deregistration Does Not End HRDC’s Activities
Kaiyatsa clarified that the decision affects HRDC’s registration status as an NGO and not its existence as a Civil Society Organisation (CSO).
He maintained that the coalition remains committed to advocating for the rights and freedoms of Malawians despite losing its NGO registration status.
According to Kaiyatsa, HRDC will continue defending human rights and holding authorities accountable.
Planned Demonstrations Remain On Course
Addressing concerns about the planned demonstrations, Kaiyatsa said the protests would proceed as scheduled.

He argued that demonstrations fall under civil society activities and are not dependent on an organisation having NGO registration.
His remarks signal that HRDC intends to maintain its planned civic action despite the regulatory setback.
Why Did NGORA Deregister HRDC?
NGORA says it deregistered the coalition after establishing that sufficient information existed to warrant the action.

However, HRDC has been contesting the decision and is now seeking legal advice on the matter.
The dispute raises important questions about NGO regulation, freedom of association and the operating environment for civil society organisations in Malawi.
Will HRDC Stop Its Demonstrations?
No. Kaiyatsa says the demonstrations will proceed as scheduled, maintaining that HRDC’s civil society activities do not depend on its NGO registration status.
