Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamvekha has called on government to create a favourable environment for businesses to thrive, saying a strong economy depends on people investing in businesses that also create employment opportunities.

Mwanamvekha said businesses, particularly large-scale investments, play a crucial role in driving economic growth because they not only generate income for their owners but also provide jobs and livelihoods for other people.

He said government therefore has a responsibility to introduce appropriate economic policies, including reasonable and affordable taxes, to enable businesses to grow and contribute meaningfully to the economy.

Mwanamvekha was speaking on Saturday at Nkando in Mulanje District, where he officially opened Paches Paradise Lodge, a hospitality facility owned by businessman Charles Maiden.

According to Mwanamvekha, government should focus on creating conditions that encourage people to invest while ensuring that entrepreneurs are able to benefit from their investments.

He stressed that when businesses are allowed to grow, the benefits extend beyond business owners as more people get employment opportunities and communities benefit from increased economic activity.

The Minister also commended Maiden for investing in the hospitality sector, saying such investments have the potential to contribute to the development of the local economy.

Meanwhile, Nancy Maiden, wife of the owner of Paches Paradise Lodge, has appealed to government to provide more support to people venturing into businesses.

Nancy said supporting entrepreneurs was important because their businesses can contribute to job creation and the development of communities.

She urged government to consider measures that can help local business people overcome challenges and expand their investments.

The opening of Paches Paradise Lodge comes as private-sector investment continues to be regarded as an important component of economic development, particularly through job creation and the expansion of local businesses.
