Newly appointed Balaka Police Station Officer Richard Bulla has called for greater cooperation between the police and community leaders, urging members of the Station Executive Committee (SEC) not to place blame solely on law enforcement whenever problems arise.
Bulla made the remarks on Tuesday when the Station Executive Committee welcomed him to Balaka Police Station following his appointment to lead the station.
Local media reports that Bulla has taken over from Mike Chambakata, who has been transferred to Karonga Police Station to serve as Station Officer.
The new station commander stressed the importance of shared responsibility in addressing security and law enforcement challenges, saying effective policing requires cooperation between the police and members of the communities they serve.
Station Executive Committee Chairperson Christopher Piyo said the committee was ready to work closely with Bulla and the police in promoting law enforcement and maintaining security in Balaka.
Piyo said the SEC looked forward to building a constructive working relationship with the new Station Officer to address challenges affecting communities within the police station’s jurisdiction.
The meeting marked the beginning of Bulla’s tenure at Balaka Police Station as he assumes responsibility for policing operations following Chambakata’s transfer to Karonga.
The call for cooperation highlights the important role played by community structures in supporting police efforts to prevent crime, maintain public safety and resolve security concerns.
Bulla’s appointment comes as police stations across Malawi continue to rely on partnerships with local leaders and community committees to strengthen communication and improve cooperation between law enforcement authorities and the public.
