DURBAN – One suspect wanted for the killing of two Crime Intelligence officers has been shot dead and five others arrested during a series of police operations across KwaZulu-Natal on Friday morning.
In a press statement just released, police said the suspect was fatally wounded in a shootout with officers at Emaplasini in Inanda.
The operation follows the ambush killing of Captain Louis Nel and Sergeant Mandla Khuzwayo in Mount Edgecombe in April 2026.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), a prosecutorial-guided investigation was launched immediately after the officers were killed.
In the early hours of Friday, 25th September 2026, an intelligence-led multidisciplinary operation was conducted in various areas, leading to the arrest of five suspects in Pinetown, Amanzimtoti, Mandeni and Newlands West.
A sixth suspect barricaded himself inside a house in Inanda and refused to obey police instructions, opening fire on officers for about three hours.
Police said negotiations continued until the suspect released his girlfriend, who was inside the house with him.
The suspect was later shot and fatally wounded during the operation.
A Special Task Force officer was shot in the hand during the exchange but is in good spirits after receiving first aid, police said.
The five arrested suspects are being processed and are expected to appear in court on Monday, 28th September 2026.
SAPS said investigations are continuing.
