MEC Appoints Andrew Kamkwalala as New Chief Elections Officer

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has appointed Andrew Kamkwalala as its new Chief Elections Officer, replacing Andrew Mpesi, who resigned from the position earlier this year.

Kamkwalala, who has been serving as MEC’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer responsible for Finance and Administration, will now take over the Commission’s key electoral administration role.

MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa confirmed the appointment in an official announcement.

Kamkwalala joined the Malawi Electoral Commission on 1 November 2022 as Deputy Chief Executive Officer – Finance and Administration.

Before joining MEC, he served as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of National Integrated Technologies Limited (NITEL), one of Malawi’s leading technology companies, from November 2015 to October 2022.

He brings extensive experience in financial management, corporate administration and organisational leadership to his new role.

Kamkwalala is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (FCMA) and a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA). He holds a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Accountancy degree.

He is also an alumnus of the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business’ Executive Leadership Programme, which focused on leadership in dynamic environments.

His appointment comes as MEC continues carrying out its mandate of managing and administering elections in Malawi.

Kamkwalala will now lead the Commission’s electoral administration as the new Chief Elections Officer, succeeding Mpesi.
