Well-known philanthropist and social commentator Onjezani Kenani has raised questions over the handling of mobile phone evidence following the plane crash that claimed the lives of several Malawians on June 10.
Kenani said it was concerning that mobile phones belonging to some of the victims reportedly appeared on a mobile network tower in Mzimba Turn-Off, about 45 kilometres from the reported crash site at the TNM Nthungwa tower, hours after the accident.
He noted that Raiply and Chikangawa towers are located between Nthungwa and Mzimba Turn-Off, raising further questions about the reported phone activity.
Kenani also questioned why the Office of the President reportedly provided a phone belonging to Hon. Nancy Tembo, who was not on the aircraft, instead of the phone of the Vice-President.
He further said it was disturbing that phones which allegedly showed network activity and received airtime on the day of the crash were later presented in heavily damaged condition.
Kenani’s remarks add to calls for greater clarity over the evidence surrounding the June 10 plane crash and the recovery and identification of the victims.
Malawi Freedom Network will continue to follow developments surrounding the investigation and any official explanations regarding the reported phone records.
