The People’s Development Party (PDP), United Democratic Front (UDF), and UTM Party have jointly raised concerns over the arrest and treason charge against Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa, describing the development as one that requires strict adherence to Malawi’s Constitution and the rule of law.

The parties argued that political speech, criticism of government policies, or participation in public discourse should not, on their own, be treated as treason. They stressed that safeguarding freedom of expression is essential to protecting Malawi’s democratic order and constitutional governance.

PDP, UDF and UTM have called on law enforcement agencies and prosecuting authorities to handle the matter with transparency, professionalism, restraint, and full respect for the Constitution. They said adherence to due process and the rule of law is critical in maintaining public confidence in the country’s justice system.

The three parties also warned that the handling of politically sensitive cases carries significant implications for democracy, civil liberties, and public trust in state institutions. They urged authorities to ensure that the enforcement of the law does not undermine constitutionally protected freedoms.
