NICE Proposes Quota System

National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) has called for new laws that will help to empower women to go for various public positions in the country.

NICE acting Chief Executive Officer, Grey Kalindekafe, was speaking in Karonga after noting that out of 15 candidates that are participating in the Ward Councillor by-elections in Chitipa, Karonga and Balaka there are no women candidates.

Kalindekafe, therefore, suggests an electoral review to adopt a quota system that would encourage women’s participation.

Kalindekafe has also expressed worry that other political parties are not participating in the by-elections saying in Karonga for example, only four are taking part.

The four include the Malawi Congress Party, UTM, Aford and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
