Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) has stood firm against the proposed abolition of the Death Penalty Bill which is being championed by civil society organisations in the country.
MAM Spokesperson Sheikh Dinala Chabulika, said the death penalty serves as an important warning to would-be offenders and the law needs to be made from the victims’ point of view.
Sheikh Chabulika made the remarks during a debate that took place in Lilongwe where the government, through the Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo, expressed optimism to take the bill to Parliament in the forthcoming sitting of Parliament.
On the other hand, Inkosi ya Makosi Gomani, expressed satisfaction with the bill as he agreed that it will serve as a plus to the consolidation of human rights in the country.
On his part, a representative of civil society organisations, Charles Kajoloweka, was quick to applaud the government for the abolition of the law that has been toothless since 1992.
Last year, President Dr Lazarus Chakwera pardoned more than five people who were on death row after being found guilty by the courts.
