Nankhumwa Appeals To International Community For More Assistance In Malawi

Leader of the Opposition in parliament, Kondwani Nankhumwa, has appealed to the international community for assistance in Malawi’s recovery and reconstruction efforts post tropical CycloneFreddy catastrophe.

Nankhumwa, who after engaging officials from the Malawi Society of Japan, who previously worked in Malawi from Tokyo, Japan has told Zodiak Online that he made a case for Malawi in areas of public infrastructure, such as roads and bridges, whose destruction has exacerbated transportation and communication woes across Malawi.

Nankhumwa, who is also Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice president for the south and legislator for Mulanje Central, underscored that the cyclone had not only claimed numerous lives but had also left survivors in dire poverty, having lost their homes, belongings, and sources of sustenance.

He said, Shuichiro Nishioka, the former Japanese Ambassador to Malawi and current chairperson of the Association, has acknowledged his (Nankhumwa) plea and assured him that the appeal will be presented at the association’s next meeting. He further pledged that the Malawi Society of Japan would continue to support the efforts of both governments in strengthening the existing relationship between the two nations.
