Minister of Information and Communications Technology Shadric Namalomba has warned Malawians about growing cybersecurity threats, citing the hacking of WhatsApp accounts as a sign of increasing risks in the digital space.

Speaking on Tuesday at the opening of a four-day national cybersecurity drill and conference organised by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) at Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe, Namalomba stressed the need to strengthen digital security as technology use expands.

“We must embrace digital technology, and recognise the impact it may bring,” he said.

The conference, held under the theme “Strengthening National Cyber Resilience Through Collaboration and Preparedness,” seeks to improve protection against cyberattacks, particularly for vulnerable groups.

The event highlights the importance of collaboration among government institutions, telecommunications companies, regulators and other stakeholders in safeguarding Malawi’s digital space.
