Islamic charity organisation Ahlus Sunna Foundation (ASF) has donated assorted food items to 350 vulnerable households in Lilongwe City Kamphuno Constituency as part of efforts to cushion families against hunger during the current lean season.

The donation, made on Saturday in Lilongwe, comes amid growing concerns over food insecurity, with the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) estimating that at least 2.6 million people will face food shortages during the 2026/27 lean season.

Speaking during the distribution exercise, ASF Public Relations Manager Wasim Arif said organisations should complement government efforts by supporting vulnerable communities facing food shortages.

Arif said the foundation recognises the difficulties that come with the lean season, which runs from October 2026 to March 2027, particularly for low-income households and other vulnerable groups.

He said the organisation was committed to helping ease the burden on families struggling to access basic food supplies.

The beneficiaries include widows, elderly people, child-headed households and low-income families who are among those most affected by food insecurity.

Lilongwe City Kamphuno Member of Parliament Khadja Chunga commended the foundation for its intervention, describing the support as timely and important in assisting struggling families.

Chunga also appealed for more assistance, thanking ASF for its commitment to extend support to a total of 3,000 households across her constituency.

One of the beneficiaries, Ayinesi Macheka, expressed gratitude to the foundation, saying the food donation had provided much-needed relief at a time when many households were struggling to meet their daily food needs.

The intervention highlights the growing role of charitable organisations in complementing government efforts to address food insecurity as thousands of vulnerable households prepare for the difficult months ahead.
