Mzuzu, Malawi – In a shocking turn of events during a TNM Super League match between Moyale Barracks FC and Karonga United FC at Mzuzu Stadium, a Super League official’s dishonest action has led to an erroneous award for the Man of the Match.
The incident occurred on Saturday, July 28, 2024, during a highly anticipated clash between the two teams. As the match unfolded, fans witnessed an outstanding performance by a player from Moyale Barracks FC, Peter Ng’ambi who wore jersey number 27.
Ng”ambi’s skillful dribbling, precise passes, and crucial goal contributions caught the attention of the panel comprising football coaches and sports journalists.

However, when it came time to announce the Man of the Match, confusion ensued. The Super League of Malawi official, Lusungu Mtumbuka who is responsible for reporting about the selected recipient, deliberately made an error.
Instead of awarding the honour to the standout Peter Ng’ambi for Moyale Barracks FC, he for the reasons known to himself went and advised his boss, Henry Banda to give the accolade to Maneno Nyoni (25).
The incorrect announcement left coachess and journalists baffled. Those who sat at the VIP stand who already knew about the selected player expressed their disappointment, while the player who should have received the award remained gracious despite the oversight.
Responding to the accusations Mtumbula simply said: “I am also surprised that Mr Henz Banda has just changed and gives the accolade to the wrong player,”
But the SULOM regional boss, Henry Banda defended his inaccurate decision claiming that some people gave him that name of the day’s recipient of the award, Maneno Nyoni.
There are hopes that the Super League governing body (SULOM) will launch an investigation into the matter. The official’s actions be scrutinized, as questions are being raised about the integrity of the selection process. Fans demand transparency and accountability to ensure that such mistakes do not recur in future matches.
Moyale Barracks FC management has not yet issued any statement or express their concern.
Moyale’s official who did not want his identity to be revealed said they always believe that the rightful recipient of the Man of the Match award deserves recognition for his outstanding performance on the field.

“That is frustrating, let alone those deserved players receive such accolades for their outstanding performances,” he said.
Chairperson for the days MOTM selection committee Etson Kadenge acknowledged the error and apologized to both the affected player while pledging to cooperate fully with the investigation and support any necessary corrective measures.
“As the football community awaits the league’s official response, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fair play, honesty, and accuracy in sports. Everyone hope that justice will prevail, and the deserving player receive the recognition he rightfully earned during that memorable match,” said Kadenge.
