Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) on Thursday had a double celebration as it commemorated its 10th anniversary at a ceremony that also saw 610 graduates receiving their certificates, diplomas and degrees.
Chisomo Mukoka, a female alumni currently working at Illovo Sugar (Malawi) started the motivation speeches recalling how walking the corridors of MUST shaped her into the leadership position she prides in now.
“I had a dream to make my life meaningful; so, I worked so hard towards achieving my goals, although along the journey I felt lost but giving up was not an option.
“I kept asking for help from whosoever could help me and despite all the challenges met on the way I was so determined to stay at MUST,” Mukoka said.
She advised students, particularly girls to be focused, adapt to new skills and be able to take a risk in life despite the fact that not everything goes as planned.
In his remarks, acting chairperson of the University council, Boyd Luwe said MUST has achieved a lot more in a decade of excellence and is geared towards an impactful era ahead.
“The University started with three undergraduate programmes and two postgraduate (masters) programs in 2014.
“Today , MUST has 27 undergraduate programmes across four schools of Bingu School of Culture and Heritage, Academy of Medical Science, Malawi Institute of Technology, Ndata School of Climate and Health Sciences and 22 postgraduate (masters and PHDs) programmes,” he added.
“MUST is increasing its academic programmes and student intakes in line with its strategic plan in order to widen access to higher education in the country,” said Luwe.
Luwe said the University has plans to concentrate on establishing more postgraduate programmes to consolidate its research portfolio.
“We have also launched Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Clinical and Bio-chemical Science, we have invested K60 billion in research grants, we have shifted from K1.3 to K4.2 billion in loan boards, just to mention a few,” he stated.
“We are not only being MUST but also shapers of the future leaders,” he emphasized.
