The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced it will conduct supplementary voter registration for Phase 1 voters, following a court ruling addressing irregularities in the initial registration process.
The court determined that the National Registration Bureau (NRB) failed to deploy officers alongside MEC officials during the registration exercise. This oversight resulted in eligible voters being unable to acquire the unique identification numbers required for voter registration and participation in the September 2025 elections.
MEC Chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja made the announcement, clarifying that the upcoming exercise is a supplementary registration, not an extension of the registration period. The clarification underscores that this initiative aims to rectify previous omissions rather than prolong the process.
Justice Mtalimanja also stated that similar supplementary voter registration exercises will be conducted for Phases 2 and 3. These measures will ensure that all potential voters who were previously denied the opportunity to register can now participate in the electoral process.
The supplementary registration is critical to uphold the integrity of the 2025 elections and ensure that no eligible voter is disenfranchised due to administrative shortcomings. MEC’s decision reflects a commitment to inclusivity and compliance with the court’s directive, reinforcing the democratic values of the nation.
As the registration period approaches, MEC urges all eligible voters to take advantage of the exercise and ensure their names appear on the voters’ roll.
