Police in Lilongwe have this morning arrested former Minister of Trade and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) runningmate Vitumbiko Mumba in what is fast becoming one of the most dramatic post-election developments.

According to highly-placed police sources, Mumba was picked up from his Area 47 residence at exactly 11:30am, before being driven under tight security to Lingadzi Police Station.

Although police are yet to issue an official statement, officers familiar with the matter say the arrest is directly linked to Mumba’s controversial “WE HAVE GOT IT” remarks made during an MCP press briefing in Lilongwe soon after the September 16 general elections.
The statement, which went viral instantly, was widely interpreted as implying election fraud and premature victory claims, allegedly targeted at the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Mumba’s comments attracted widespread criticism, with legal and governance analysts warning that the utterance could be construed as incitement, misinformation, or an attempt to undermine the credibility of the electoral process.

Today’s arrest marks a major escalation in the political tension that has gripped the country since election day. Supporters of the former minister have already begun gathering outside Lingadzi Police Station, demanding his immediate release and accusing authorities of state intimidation.

As of now, police have not disclosed the specific charges Mumba is facing, but sources indicate he will be questioned over allegations related to false statements, incitement, and attempts to mislead the public on election outcomes.

This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as more details emerge.
