Mzimba South Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere, has been arrested by the Malawi Police Service over allegations relating to the theft of a quarry, police and his legal representative have confirmed.
Jere was arrested on Tuesday after honouring a police summons to the Malawi Police Service Headquarters in Area 30, Lilongwe.
His lawyer, George Jivason Kadzipatike, confirmed the development, saying the legislator has denied all allegations leveled against him.
“He denies these allegations. He is currently being taken to Lumbadzi Police Station,” Kadzipatike said shortly after the arrest.
The lawyer questioned the timing of the case, arguing that the matter dates back approximately five years and has resurfaced at a politically sensitive moment.DAY LIGHT ROBBERY: Batawalala under fire, tops govt claims list, wants to milk taxpayers K250billion
According to Kadzipatike, the arrest comes shortly after Jere, together with other concerned citizens, obtained a court injunction stopping the proposed relocation of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) headquarters from Lilongwe to Blantyre.
“As I said yesterday, it is unfortunate that this case is coming after five years, and immediately after Chambulanyina has, with others, obtained an injunction against the relocation of MEC to Blantyre,” he said.
Speaking before his arrest, Jere linked the police summons to a quarry he reportedly purchased from a Chinese construction company that was involved in the rehabilitation of the Jenda–Edingeni Road in 2021.
