The United Democratic Front (UDF) and the UTM Party have expressed growing concern over what they describe as continued efforts to undermine the Office of the Vice President, warning that such developments pose a threat to Malawi’s constitutional order.
In separate statements released on Thursday, the two political parties emphasized that the authority of the Vice President is constitutionally mandated and must be upheld at all times.
The UTM Party cited a series of alleged incidents it says reflect mistreatment of the office, including underfunding, withdrawal of security, and interference in the execution of official duties. The party warned that such actions risk eroding the integrity of one of the country’s highest offices.
On its part, the UDF described the situation as a systematic attempt to weaken the Office of the Vice President, stressing that any erosion of constitutional roles could set a dangerous precedent for governance and democratic accountability.
Both parties have since called on the President, state institutions, and security agencies to respect and uphold the Constitution, and to ensure that the Vice President is accorded the necessary protection, support, and institutional respect befitting the office.
They further urged authorities to address the concerns with urgency in order to preserve public confidence in the country’s governance systems.
Government had not yet issued a response on the matter by the time of publication.
