The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has taken a major step toward modernising taxpayer communication by launching a fully integrated in-house digital production studio designed to improve public engagement and promote digital tax services across the country.
The state-of-the-art facility was provided by the German development agency GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Government (BMZ) and the European Union as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen public financial management and enhance service delivery in Malawi.
The new studio will enable MRA to produce high-quality videos, podcasts, interviews, and other digital content quickly and independently. The investment is expected to improve the Authority’s ability to communicate important tax information in a timely, accurate, and easy-to-understand manner.MRA Investigates 44 Employees Over Corruption
One of the key priorities of the initiative is to increase public awareness and understanding of the Msonkho Online tax system, which has become central to Malawi’s efforts to digitise tax administration and improve compliance.
Speaking about the new facility, MRA Head of Corporate Affairs Wilma Chalulu described the studio as a strategic investment that will transform how the Authority interacts with taxpayers.
“This studio is a strategic investment in how we communicate with taxpayers. It gives us the ability to respond faster, simplify complex tax information, and engage citizens through quality content that is timely and relevant,” Chalulu said.
Previously, MRA often relied on external production services to create communication materials. The new in-house facility will reduce production costs, speed up content creation, and allow the Authority to respond more effectively to emerging issues affecting taxpayers.

GIZ Public Financial Economic Management (PFEM) Team Leader Lukas Fischer said effective communication is essential for strengthening trust between public institutions and citizens.
“Effective public communication is essential for building trust between institutions and citizens. The in-house studio will help strengthen MRA’s capacity to deliver consistent and engaging content that improves taxpayer awareness and the navigation of the Msonkho Online tax system,” Fischer said.
The investment reflects the continued partnership between Malawi, the German Government, and the European Union in promoting transparent governance, digital transformation, and efficient public service delivery.
As more Malawians embrace digital platforms for accessing government services, MRA believes the new communication hub will play a critical role in delivering reliable information through videos, podcasts, interviews, social media content, and other multimedia platforms.Shop Owners Plan Court Injunction Against MRA Over Electronic Invoicing System
The Authority expects the improved communication capacity to help taxpayers better understand their obligations, navigate digital tax services with greater ease, and build confidence in Malawi’s tax administration system.
By investing in modern communication technology, MRA is positioning itself to meet taxpayers where they are—online—while making tax education more accessible, engaging, and responsive to the needs of citizens and businesses alike.
