Chiradzulu-based activist Suleman Chitera has praised President Arthur Peter Mutharika and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government for what he describes as a determined effort to rebuild Malawi’s economy, restore public confidence and reverse the economic challenges inherited from the previous administration.

Chitera said the government, through its economic management team led by Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralisation Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha, is working around the clock to restore stability, attract development support and rebuild trust among local and international partners.

According to Chitera, Malawi is beginning to experience signs of economic recovery after a difficult period marked by economic pressures, saying improved access to essential commodities, foreign exchange availability and fuel supply indicate that the country is moving towards stability.

He singled out Minister Mwanamvekha for his role in rebuilding confidence in Malawi’s economy, describing him as a key figure in efforts to restore credibility with donors, investors and other development partners.

“Mwanamvekha is working tirelessly to bring back economic confidence and restore trust. Rebuilding an economy is not an overnight process, but the commitment being shown is giving Malawians hope,” Chitera said.

Chitera further argued that Malawi’s economic challenges are a result of poor decisions made during the previous administration led by former President Lazarus Chakwera and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

He alleged that the former government failed to properly manage public resources, claiming that corruption, misuse of government funds and poor economic decisions affected the country’s development progress.

“Malawi would have been much further ahead, but the country was pushed backwards because the previous government failed to manage the affairs of the nation properly,” Chitera said.

He claimed that resources lost through poor management and corruption could have been channelled into critical sectors such as infrastructure development, healthcare, education, agriculture and job creation.

Chitera said the current administration faces a major responsibility of rebuilding the economy, restoring confidence and ensuring that government resources are directed towards projects that improve the lives of ordinary Malawians.

He called for continued accountability, transparency and responsible management of public finances, saying these are essential for achieving sustainable economic growth.

“The journey to economic recovery is not easy, but with strong leadership, discipline and proper management of resources, Malawi can regain its position and create better opportunities for its people,” Chitera said.

The activist also encouraged Malawians to support efforts aimed at rebuilding the economy, saying national development requires cooperation between government, businesses, civil society and citizens.
