The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri, has launched the construction of the K7.3 billion Chimbiya Rural Growth Centre in Dedza, warning against corruption and unnecessary delays in implementing the project.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, Phiri said the government expects the project to be completed within 12 months to promote economic growth, empower farmers and create jobs in rural communities.Malawi Freedom Network Crowns Ben Phiri Minister of the Month

He said the Rural Growth Centre is part of the government’s efforts to reduce rural-urban migration by creating economic opportunities closer to where people live, in line with the Malawi 2063 development agenda.

At least 18 Irish potato farmer groups are expected to benefit from the facility, which will provide access to structured markets, modern storage facilities and value addition services to improve farmers’ incomes and reduce post-harvest losses.

The project is being funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) through the Transforming Agriculture Through Diversification and Entrepreneurship (TRADE) Programme.Business columnist says Mwanamvekha facing difficult task of restoring economy

TRADE National Programme Coordinator Barbara Mtapala said the investment will address challenges facing Irish potato farmers in Dedza, including limited access to improved seed and reliable markets.

She said the modern market will strengthen agricultural value chains and improve the marketing of Irish potatoes through better storage and trading infrastructure.
