The Malawi Government has officially launched the rehabilitation of the M1 Road from Bunda Turnoff in Lilongwe to Kameza Roundabout in Blantyre, marking a major milestone in efforts to improve the country’s transport infrastructure and stimulate economic growth.

Speaking during the ceremony, Mhango described the rehabilitation of the M1 as a strategic national project that will improve connectivity between Malawi’s two largest cities while enhancing the safe and efficient movement of people and goods.

He said the M1 is one of the country’s most important transport corridors, linking major commercial centres and supporting trade, agriculture, tourism and investment. He added that rehabilitating the road will reduce travel time, lower vehicle operating costs and improve road safety for motorists.

Mhango also urged contractors to ensure that the works are completed within the agreed timeframe and to the required quality standards, saying taxpayers deserve value for money from public infrastructure investments.

He further appealed to communities living along the road corridor to cooperate with contractors and safeguard construction equipment and materials to ensure the successful implementation of the project.

Representing the Dedza District Commissioner, Director of Public Works Juliana Qoto welcomed the commencement of the rehabilitation works, describing the project as a long-awaited development for the district and neighbouring communities.

She noted that the road serves thousands of travellers and businesses every day and that its rehabilitation will help reduce accidents and improve the overall efficiency of transport along one of Malawi’s busiest highways.

Qoto also called on residents to support the project by cooperating with construction teams and protecting public infrastructure throughout the implementation period.

The rehabilitation of the M1 Road is expected to create employment opportunities for local communities during construction while boosting business activities in areas along the corridor.

Once completed, the upgraded road is expected to strengthen national connectivity, improve regional trade and provide a safer and more reliable transport route for passengers and freight travelling between Lilongwe, Dedza, Ntcheu, Blantyre and surrounding areas.
