Blantyre, Malawi – Nyambadwe United, a second-tier football team, celebrated a special victory in the ThumbsUp Southern Region Football League by defeating Mighty Tigers Reserve 2-1. The team, whose tagline is “Yesu Amakukonda” (Jesus Loves You), marked the occasion by wearing a newly donated set of uniforms from Tunisia-based company Afrofashions.
The K1.5 million uniform, which was donated last weekend by Afrofashions’ Malawian co-founder and head designer Mehmuna Ibrahim Schumann, was presented to the team’s technical director Tony Fletcher. The match at Kamuzu Stadium was the first time Nyambadwe United donned their new attire.
“This win is a special dedication to Afrofashions for giving us this beautiful football jersey set. It would have been very absurd to lose while wearing such a beautiful uniform for the first time,” Fletcher remarked after the match.
Nyambadwe’s victory places them third in the 12-team Group B, tied on 30 points with second-placed Mighty Wanderers but behind on goal difference. FCB Nyasa Big Bullets currently lead the table with 31 points, having played one game fewer than both teams.
Nyambadwe United is sponsored by Echo Africa, a Christian organization that distributes Bibles, conducts pastoral training, and runs various programs. Fletcher emphasized that the team uses football as a tool for evangelism, spreading the gospel through the sport.
The victory not only boosts Nyambadwe United’s league standing but also strengthens their belief in the power of faith and teamwork, further enhanced by their partnership with Afrofashions.
As the season progresses, the team hopes to continue their success both on and off the field, promoting their message through the beautiful game.
