Elections Officer responsible for Mzuzu City, Pilirani Simkonda, says there is an increase in the number of potential voters being registered in the ongoing voter registration exercise in Mzuzu city in preparation for the 2025 General Election.
He said this in an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Friday, just three days before the closure of the first phase of the exercise.
Sinkonda observed that there has been a substantial increase of registrants in the second week of the exercise, as compared to the first.
“We have not encountered serious challenges so far apart from the low turnout which we experienced in the first week.
“As we are drawing closer to the closing day of the exercise, the numbers are increasing and we are sure that we will register a good number of potential voters by Sunday” he said.
Simkonda assured people that following communication from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), after the closure of the exercise on November 3, as planned, the first phase will be extended.
“According to the communication, specific dates and duration of this extension will be announced at the conclusion of phase three,” she said.
Executive Director of Apause, one of the civil society organizations in Mzuzu, Peter Mumba said the number of people turning out for registration is not impressive.
“We expected that more people are going to be registered because the city’s population has grown but that is not the case.
“We are continuing with public awareness on the need for all potential voters to be registered so that they participate on promoting democratic and good governance by voting for leaders of their choice come September 16, 2025,” said Mumba.
