Malawi’s Scorchers have completed one of the most remarkable campaigns in the history of the country’s women’s football, reaching their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final and securing a historic place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Scorchers’ extraordinary journey in Morocco has transformed expectations around Malawi women’s football and put the team firmly on the international stage.

Although Malawi eventually lost 3-0 to Cameroon in the WAFCON final, the tournament represented a landmark achievement for the team. Cameroon claimed its first WAFCON title with the victory.

Malawi makes World Cup history

The biggest achievement of the Scorchers’ campaign came before the final.

Malawi defeated Ghana 2-1 in the quarter-finals to reach the WAFCON semi-finals, a result that automatically secured the country a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

It was Malawi’s first-ever qualification for a FIFA World Cup tournament at senior national-team level.

The achievement has given the Scorchers a new place in Malawian sporting history.

Scorchers reach first WAFCON final

The team then continued its incredible run by defeating Algeria 3-1 in the semi-final.

Tabitha Chawinga was again at the centre of Malawi’s attacking display, scoring twice, while her sister Temwa Chawinga also found the net.

The victory sent Malawi into its first WAFCON final and created a historic all-time high for the national women’s team.

Cameroon ends Malawi’s title dream

Malawi’s fairytale run eventually ended against Cameroon.

The Indomitable Lionesses produced a strong performance to beat the Scorchers 3-0 in the final in Rabat and lift the continental trophy for the first time.

Despite the defeat, Malawi finished as runners-up in a tournament in which the team had entered as WAFCON debutants.

What next for the Scorchers?

The biggest question now is how Malawi can build on this success.

Qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup gives the Football Association of Malawi an opportunity to develop a long-term programme around the national team.

The focus will likely extend beyond preparing for the World Cup itself.

Malawi needs stronger domestic women’s football, better training facilities, regular international matches, improved player welfare and continued investment in youth development if the Scorchers are to remain competitive against Africa’s strongest teams.

Football Association of Malawi president Fleetwood Haiya has already highlighted the importance of investment in grassroots and women’s football following the team’s World Cup qualification.

Chawinga sisters remain central to Malawi’s rise

Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga have been among the most recognisable faces of Malawi’s historic campaign.

Their performances have helped draw international attention to Malawian women’s football, while Temwa’s success in the United States has further increased the visibility of the Scorchers.

The sisters’ performances during the WAFCON have also demonstrated the value of having Malawi’s top players competing at a high level internationally.

A new generation has been inspired

Perhaps the biggest long-term impact of the Scorchers’ campaign could be among young girls in Malawi.

The team has shown that Malawian players can compete against some of Africa’s biggest women’s football nations and reach the highest level of international competition.

The World Cup qualification therefore represents more than a single tournament achievement. It could become a turning point for women’s football in Malawi.

Malawi now has a bigger target

The WAFCON final is over, but the Scorchers’ biggest international challenge is still ahead.

The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will give Malawi an opportunity to compete against the world’s best teams for the first time.

After their historic performance in Morocco, expectations will be significantly higher.

The immediate task for Malawi will be to turn the momentum generated by the Scorchers into a sustainable women’s football programme capable of producing more international stars and keeping the national team among Africa’s leading sides.

For a team that entered WAFCON 2026 as debutants and left as continental runners-up and World Cup qualifiers, the Scorchers have already changed the story of Malawian football.
