Legal expert Bright Theu Criticizes President Chakwera and Police Chief over vigilante violence in Lilongwe

By Burnett Munthali

Renowned legal expert Bright Theu has publicly criticized Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera and the Inspector General of Police, Merlyne Yolamu, for their silence amidst escalating vigilante violence in Lilongwe. Theu’s remarks came in the wake of reports that armed groups wielding pangas, knives, and other weapons have been disrupting protests in the capital city.

In a post on his social media page, Theu described the silence from the country’s leadership as shameful, particularly since Chakwera previously condemned similar acts during the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration.

“It is disgraceful that President Chakwera remains silent today when he once criticized the same behavior during the DPP era. If you think this will help you politically, you are mistaken. This is barbaric,” wrote Theu.

Theu further warned that ignoring such acts of violence would only entrench a culture of lawlessness in Malawi. He noted that the vigilante activities have instilled fear among citizens, a concerning development as the country prepares for general elections in September 2025.

The criticism highlights growing concerns about political violence and its potential impact on the democratic process. As Malawi approaches a crucial election period, the need for decisive leadership to ensure peace and security has never been more urgent.
