Tension has gripped Mvela Trading Centre following reports that soldiers from the Support Mvela Battalion have allegedly set fire to people’s property.
The soldiers are said to have launched the attacks in retaliation after one of their fellow soldiers was killed.
Eyewitnesses from the area reported scenes of panic and confusion as residents scrambled for safety while several shops, homes, and vehicles were set ablaze.
According to community members, the soldiers descended on the trading centre in the early hours of the day, targeting businesses and personal property belonging to civilians.
Many residents have fled the area for fear of further violence, leaving behind their homes and livelihoods.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the incident was triggered by anger and grief over the death of their colleague, but local leaders have condemned the retaliatory acts, saying innocent civilians should not suffer for crimes they did not commit.
Human rights activists and civil society organizations have since called for an immediate investigation into the soldiers’ conduct.
They have urged authorities, including the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), to ensure that military discipline is enforced and that soldiers are held accountable for any unlawful actions.
The violence has also raised concerns over the relationship between the military and local communities, with some residents expressing fear and distrust.
Local law enforcement and government officials are expected to visit Mvela Trading Centre to assess the situation and provide relief to affected families.
Meanwhile, security experts have called for calm and dialogue, warning that escalating tensions could result in more violence and further destruction of property.
