Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamvekha has officially commissioned a new Portland cement manufacturing plant in Balaka District, marking a major step toward boosting Malawi’s industrial capacity and job creation.
The state-of-the-art factory, whose construction began in 2024, is expected to produce up to 800,000 metric tonnes of cement annually, significantly strengthening the country’s supply of one of the most essential construction materials. Authorities say the increased production will help stabilise cement prices, support infrastructure projects, and reduce reliance on imported products.
According to officials, 432 Malawians have already been employed at the plant, with more job opportunities expected as the company scales up its operations. Community members in Balaka have welcomed the development, noting that it will stimulate the local economy and improve livelihoods.
