Namitete Zitha have produced one of the biggest results of the NBS Bank National Division League season after defeating leaders Songwe Border United 1–0 at Mchinji Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The victory gives Zitha a major boost in their push for promotion to the FDH Bank Premiership, while dealing a significant blow to Songwe’s title campaign.

Despite the setback, Songwe Border United remain at the top of the 12-team NBS Bank National Division League table with 22 points from 10 matches. Extreme are second with 19 points from nine games, keeping the promotion race tightly contested.

Zitha climb the table

The victory has lifted Namitete Zitha from sixth to fifth position, taking their tally to 15 points from 10 matches.

The result could prove important as the season enters a crucial stage, with teams battling for promotion and a strong finish in the league standings.

Zitha coach Enock Mhone described the win as an important boost for his side and said the team remains focused on its ambition of earning promotion to the FDH Bank Premiership next year.

“This victory is a big encouragement for the team as we continue working towards our ambition of playing in the FDH Bank Premiership next year,” Mhone said.

Songwe promise to fight back

For Songwe, the defeat is a setback but does not change their position at the summit.

Chirambo is confident that Songwe can bounce back and continue their pursuit of the National Division League title.

With Songwe still leading the standings and several teams within touching distance, the result in Mchinji has added further intrigue to an increasingly competitive promotion race.
