Irish Ambassador to Malawi Kate Brady says Malawi has the potential to become a key player in legume production, highlighting the crop’s importance in strengthening food security and improving livelihoods.
Brady made the remarks on Tuesday in Chikwawa District during the launch of the Legume Tour Malawi 2026, an initiative aimed at promoting legume production and showcasing opportunities within the sector.
She said Malawi’s favourable agricultural conditions and the growing importance of legumes provide the country with an opportunity to expand production, increase household incomes and strengthen the agricultural sector.
The launch brings renewed attention to legumes such as beans, groundnuts, pigeon peas and other crops, which play an important role in nutrition, soil fertility and household food security.
Brady’s remarks come as Malawi continues to explore ways of transforming agriculture from subsistence production into a more productive and commercially viable sector.
The Legume Tour Malawi 2026 is expected to provide farmers and other stakeholders with an opportunity to share knowledge, showcase farming practices and explore opportunities for increased production and value addition.
With greater investment, improved farming technologies, access to markets and stronger support for farmers, Malawi could further position itself as an important producer of legumes in the region.
