Social media contributors have taken themselves to their facebook pages praising President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for delegating Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Dr. George Chaponda to lead Malawi’s delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York – USA.
Malawi will be represented by the Minister and four other officers from the same Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation whose attendance is sponsored by the United Nations.
Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Chipiliro Mpinganjira will join the delegation speaking for itself that the country will have only a lean attendance at the UNGA than has been expected from before.
Memories are still fresh that at one time, President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika took the whole village to a shopping spree as UNGA delegates to the USA draining public resources literally for nothing while millions of Malawians are struggling to find their ends meet.
President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera repeated the same travelling with a bloated entourage whose duty a part from shopping, was to welcome and singing praising songs to him while displaying Malawi’s culture in a foreign country.
Human Rights Lawyer Alexious Kamangila has joined all those praising President Professor Mutharika for delegating Minister to UNGA describing this as “Hats off to Mutharika.”
Kamphangala said this is the first time Malawians have seen only a five – member delegation travelling to UNGA unlike in the previous years where citizens have to deep down into their pockets funding people to the USA for shopping purposes.
He said in 2024 Dr. Lazarus Chakwera travelled with a 147 member delegation to UNGA using Malawians’ taxes saying he took not only party zealots with him to UNGA, but also his entire family.
“Ah!!! Chakwera asazabwerenso,” reads Kamangila’s writings on the wall.
But, the big question which is ringing in the heads of many Malawians is what benefit do African countries get from the UNGA meetings apart from loans which are chaining and making them beggars while they have all the resources benefiting the colonizers? Above all, Africa has no permanent seat at the UN Security Council?
As History is the good teacher, China was expelled from the UNO in 1972 for refusing to speak in English and French, the official languages of communication at the UN General Assembly.
It took 20 years for China to be brought back to the UN after super – power countries observed that they made a very big mistake of expelling China that now it was implementing big project such as nuclear bomb manufacturers, this development made China to be recognized as a super power.
Africa, beside having 55 countries and has specialized Doctors, Engineers, etc not even one African Doctor has invented a paracetamol tablet, they are all waiting for a European to have a say saying the time Africa will begin making its own inversions, the UN will give a Security seat to Africa.
Except for Comrade Robert Gabriel Mugabe, Muammar Gadafi and Nelson Mandela who are remembered for addressing a full house in the UNGA meetings, the rest of African leaders address empty chairs with most of the seats occupied by their own delegations.
