BLANTYRE — Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Decentralization, Hon. Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha, MP, has presided over the launch of the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) 2026–2031 Corporate Strategic Plan, a major step towards strengthening domestic resource mobilisation and supporting Malawi’s economic transformation agenda.

The high-level event is taking place at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre, bringing together senior government officials, business leaders, development partners and key stakeholders in the country’s revenue sector.

Mwanamvekha was welcomed by MRA Commissioner General Felix Tambulasi, who is leading the Authority’s efforts to modernise tax administration and improve revenue collection.

Also attending the launch are Secretary to the Treasury Dr. Cliff Chiunda, FDH Bank Chief Executive Officer William Mpinganjira, representatives from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as well as other senior government and private-sector officials.

The new strategic plan sets out MRA’s vision and priorities for the next five years, with a strong focus on boosting domestic revenue mobilisation, strengthening tax administration, improving compliance and making revenue collection more efficient and responsive.

At a time when Malawi is working to reduce its dependence on external financing and strengthen its fiscal position, the strategy is expected to play a critical role in ensuring that the country can generate more resources from within its own economy.

The plan also underscores the importance of embracing modern technology, improving taxpayer services and building a more efficient and transparent revenue administration system.

For businesses and individual taxpayers, the strategy is expected to promote a more predictable and user-friendly tax environment while encouraging greater compliance and widening the tax base.

The launch therefore represents more than the unveiling of a five-year institutional roadmap. It signals a renewed commitment to building a stronger revenue administration system capable of financing national development priorities and contributing meaningfully to Malawi’s economic recovery and transformation.

With the active participation of government, the private sector and development partners, MRA is positioning the 2026–2031 strategic plan as a key instrument for unlocking greater domestic resources and supporting sustainable economic growth.

The success of the strategy will ultimately depend on effective implementation, stronger cooperation with taxpayers and continued efforts to build public confidence in the country’s revenue collection system.
