Rehabilitation works on the 55-kilometre Nsipe–Liwonde Road are progressing steadily, with major construction activities continuing across several sections of the key road project.
The ongoing works are aimed at improving the condition of the road, strengthening transport connectivity and providing safer and more reliable movement for motorists and communities along the route.
Construction activities currently underway include road clearing, sub-base construction, base construction, asphalt surfacing and drainage works.
According to the latest progress on the project, more than 30 kilometres of road clearing have been completed, while work on the sub-base has covered more than 20 kilometres.
More than 15 kilometres of base construction have also been completed, with asphalt surfacing now covering over 7 kilometres of the road.
The progress marks a significant step in the rehabilitation of the route, as construction moves through different stages from preparation of the road formation to the laying of the final surfacing.
Drainage works advance
Drainage construction is also progressing, with 41 culverts completed between kilometre 30 and kilometre 55.
The culverts form an important part of the road rehabilitation works because they are designed to facilitate the movement of water across and alongside the road.
Effective drainage is particularly important for protecting road infrastructure from water-related damage, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
The drainage structures are therefore expected to help improve the durability of the rehabilitated road and reduce the impact of surface water on the road structure.
Work continues on several sections
The combination of completed clearing, sub-base, base and asphalt works shows that the project has moved beyond the initial stages of construction, with sections of the road now receiving asphalt surfacing.
At the same time, construction teams continue working on other sections where road preparation, foundation works and drainage construction are still underway.
Once completed, the rehabilitation of the Nsipe–Liwonde Road is expected to improve the quality of the road and make travel along the corridor smoother and safer for road users.
The project is also important for communities and businesses that depend on the route for the movement of people and goods.
With construction progressing across multiple components, attention will now remain on maintaining the pace of work and advancing the remaining sections towards completion.
The latest figures indicate continued progress on the 55-kilometre Nsipe–Liwonde Road rehabilitation project, with more sections expected to move into the surfacing stage as construction advances.
