Resident of Mzuzu city have launched a six-month fundraising initiative to raise K200 million to upgrade the city’s waste management infrastructure.
For years, Mzuzu City Council has struggled with waste management issues owing to poor infrastructure resulting from insufficient resources.
Presently, the city has 2 old and unreliable refuse collection vehicles, a situation that prevents the council from regular collection of waste in its strategic refuse collection points.
Upset by the status quo, the city’s residents, in partnership with the council, have embarked on a fundraising drive towards securing dependable waste management equipment.
Chairperson of the fundraising committee, Anna Msowoya Keys, stresses the importance of solidarity if the initiative is to achieve its target within the assigned period.
On his part, former CEO for Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union, Harrison Kalua, called for collective responsibility among the city’s residents in waste disposal activities.
