President Peter Mutharika has strongly condemned the killing of seven people in the Lower Shire districts following shocking allegations linking them to the disappearance of men’s private parts.

Speaking through presidential spokesperson Cathy Maulidi, Mutharika described the attacks as barbaric, unfortunate and unacceptable in a modern society. He warned members of the public against spreading false rumours and resorting to mob justice instead of allowing the law to take its course.

The President has since ordered law enforcement agencies to intensify security operations in the affected areas to restore calm and ensure that all those behind the violence are arrested and prosecuted.
The gruesome incidents, which have spread fear and tension across communities in Chikwawa and Nsanje, are believed to have been triggered by widespread rumours that authorities say are baseless.

Police have so far arrested about 45 suspects on charges ranging from murder to publishing false information likely to cause panic among the public.
Authorities continue to appeal for calm as investigations into the killings continue.
