By Burnett Munthali

Prominent activist Timothy Mtambo and Edwards Kambanje, representing the group Concerned Citizens, have voiced their readiness to lead and support today’s highly anticipated demonstrations scheduled for Wednesday, November 13. These protests are aimed at addressing the deepening economic crisis, transparency in governance, and a host of other pressing issues that Malawians are currently grappling with.

Mtambo, a well-known human rights advocate, expressed the urgency of today’s demonstrations in a public statement, saying, “This is a crucial moment for Malawians to demand the accountability and leadership we have been promised but are not receiving. We’re here to make sure our voices are heard, peacefully and firmly.” His words have resonated widely, as many Malawians look to him as a powerful advocate for citizen rights and governmental reform.

Edwards Kambanje, speaking on behalf of Concerned Citizens, echoed these sentiments, stating that the demonstrations are a reflection of the growing frustrations among Malawians who are bearing the weight of inflation, high unemployment, and fuel shortages. “Today, we come together to remind our leaders of their responsibility to address the urgent issues affecting millions of lives,” Kambanje said. His role in organizing and rallying the public alongside Mtambo underscores the unity among activists who are determined to address these national concerns.

Reports indicate that protestors from across the country have already started gathering in Lilongwe and other cities, with large turnouts expected as the day progresses. The authorities have responded by increasing police presence, a move aimed at maintaining order while allowing citizens to exercise their democratic right to protest.

The demonstrations, led by figures like Mtambo and Kambanje, have raised hopes among many Malawians for meaningful change. As today unfolds, the public will be watching closely to see if the collective voice of the people brings about a stronger response from leadership.
