Chewa Chiefs Give Aford Leader three days Ultimatum

Traditional leaders of the Chewa tribe have given Alliance for Democracy (Aford) leader Enoch Chihana a three-day ultimatum to apologize for his recent remarks that have been deemed offensive to the Achewa people.

On November 13, 2024, Chihana sparked outrage when he said, “Chimashini chimenechi cha Smartmatic mudzikavoterana ku Dambwe Komweko” at Aford’s rally in Lilongwe.

Speaking during media address in Lilongwe on Saturday 16th November, Senior chiefs Mwase, Chadza, and Nthondo, representing the Achewa tribe in Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia, have condemned Chihana’s statement, saying it has hurt the feelings of the Chewa people.

In a bold statement they warned that if Chihana fails to apologize within the given timeframe, they will take further action.

Stanley Khaira, chairperson of the Chewa Heritage Foundation, emphasized the importance of respecting cultural heritage and traditions.

He noted that Chihana’s statement was unacceptable and disrespectful to the Chewa tribe.

The Chewa chiefs have given Chihana until November 19, 2024, to apologize.

If he fails to do so, they will consider further action. As Senior Chief Nthondo stated, “Pa Chichewa timati mtsinje umawoloka madzi akadali m’mawondo, akangofika m,khosi, mtsinje suwolokekanso ndiye masiku taperekawa ngokwanira, akakhala anzeru awagwiritse ntchito.”
