A commission of inquiry, led by Justice Jabber Alide, confirms that the investigation into the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of Vice President Saulos Chilima and eight others in Chikangawa Forest on June 10, 2024 still underway.
the commission has interacted with 55 people in the Northern and Central regions, with a third session starting in Blantyre on November 15.
“Despite initial public interest, the commission has observed a decline in witness participation, emphasizing the need for more people to share their knowledge,” reads statement in part.
The commission has urged anyone with information about the crash to come forward and provide evidence.
President Lazarus Chakwera established the commission to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima tragically died in a plane crash on June 10, 2024, along with eight others.
The incident occurred when the military aircraft carrying them lost contact shortly after taking off from Lilongwe and was later found crashed in the Chikangawa Forest.
The Dornier 228 aircraft, known for its versatility and reliability, was on its way to Mzuzu International Airport when it went missing in bad weather.
The crash sparked widespread mourning, with President Chakwera canceling his scheduled trip to the Bahamas to oversee rescue efforts and express condolences.
