As Malawi’s first female Speaker of Parliament, Catherine Gotani Hara has broken barriers and paved the way for future generations of women in politics with her remarkable journey is a testament to her dedication, perseverance, and leadership skills.
A Strong Educational Background; Hara holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Malawi and a Postgraduate Degree in International Development and Project Planning and Management from the University of Brighton in the UK, equipped her with the knowledge and expertise to navigate the complexities of politics and governance.
A Proven Track Record in Politics; She is a serving Member of Parliament for Mzimba North East since 2009, initially representing the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Her experience and good conduct in and out of parliament prepared her for the role of Speaker, which she assumed in 2019.
A Champion for Women’s Rights and Gender Equality; Many political experts viewed Hara’s election as Speaker of Parliament was hailed as a victory for democracy and gender equality. She has been a vocal advocate for women’s rights having worked tirelessly to promote gender inclusion in Malawi’s politics.

Given her impressive track record and leadership skills, it’s no surprise that many including a renowned writer and good governance advocate, Julius Mithi believe Hara is destined for even higher office, such as the position of State Vice President.
