With just a few hours left before President-elect Peter Mutharika is officially sworn in, shocking developments have emerged surrounding the inauguration programme. The latest revised schedule confirms that outgoing President Lazarus Chakwera and Secretary to the President and Cabinet (SPC), Colleen Zamba, will not be in attendance at the historic event.
Chakwera and Zamba Barred from Ceremony
According to reliable sources, both Chakwera and Zamba have allegedly been barred from attending the swearing-in ceremony. This comes as a surprise given that Chakwera gracefully conceded defeat before the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) formally declared Peter Mutharika as the winner of the September 16, 2025 general election.

The move has already stirred political debate, with many Malawians questioning the motive behind excluding the outgoing Head of State and the top government official from such a crucial national event.
Political Implications of the Last-Minute Change
Analysts argue that the decision could deepen political divisions in the country. Traditionally, Malawian inaugurations have been seen as opportunities for unity, reconciliation, and peaceful transfer of power. The absence of the outgoing president could overshadow the ceremony and fuel speculation about strained relations between the two administrations.
Mutharika’s Big Day Still on Track
Despite the controversy, preparations for Mutharika’s swearing-in remain on track. Thousands of people are expected to fill Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, with dignitaries from across the region including leaders from Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Botswana, and Eswatini set to attend.

For Mutharika and his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), the inauguration marks the beginning of a new chapter, with promises of economic revival, job creation, and strengthening of democratic governance.
What This Means for Malawi’s Democracy
The exclusion of Chakwera and Zamba from the programme has raised questions about Malawi’s political tolerance and the country’s ability to embrace unity after elections. Many citizens had hoped that the handover would symbolize a smooth transition and set the tone for a reconciliatory approach moving forward.
