Pope Leo has forcefully reaffirmed his commitment to speaking against global conflicts, declaring he will not be silenced by political pressure after sharp criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Israel-Iran war: Big trouble for Israel days after airstrikes as Iran reaches closer

The confrontation escalated after Trump, posting on Truth Social, branded the pontiff “weak on crime and terrible for foreign policy,” later repeating to reporters that he was “not a big fan.” The remarks have triggered international attention, intensifying an already sensitive intersection between global politics and the Vatican’s moral voice.

Responding while travelling en route to Algeria at the start of an 11-day African visit, Pope Leo made clear he would not be drawn into a personal dispute with the U.S. president. Instead, he doubled down on his position, insisting his focus remains on peace and human dignity amid escalating global conflicts.

The pontiff has emerged as one of the most vocal religious critics of the Iran conflict, previously condemning rhetoric suggesting the destruction of Iranian society as “unacceptable” and calling repeatedly for diplomatic resolution over military escalation.

Despite mounting political backlash, Pope Leo stressed continuity rather than confrontation, signaling that his global mission will not shift in tone or urgency.

Trump’s comments come at a time when tensions between Washington and religious leadership have been increasingly visible, with foreign policy debates spilling into moral and humanitarian arenas. The Pope’s Africa tour—his second major international trip since his election last year—is expected to center on peacebuilding, inequality, and conflict prevention.

For now, neither side appears willing to step back. One is speaking in the language of power. The other, in the language of conscience.
