London-based Malawian business strategist Rhodrick Junaid Kalumpha has donated approximately K6 million to 75 girls in Salima District who performed well in the Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) examinations, calling on Malawians to support children’s education.
Kalumpha said every Malawian has a role to play in shaping the country’s future by investing in education, regardless of their financial circumstances.
Speaking to Malawi Freedom Network on the sidelines of the Chiwanja cha Ayao festival in Salima, Kalumpha said his decision to support the girls was inspired by his mother, who never attended school but made sure he received an education.
He said his mother’s commitment to his schooling demonstrated the importance of parental sacrifice and the role education plays in creating opportunities for children.
Kalumpha’s donation, estimated at K6 million, will benefit 75 girls who excelled in their PSLCE examinations, highlighting the importance of recognising academic achievement and encouraging girls to continue with their education.
His appeal comes amid continued calls for greater community involvement in supporting learners, particularly girls who may face financial and social barriers to accessing education.
Chiwanja cha Ayao Warns Chiefs Against Child Marriage
Meanwhile, Chiwanja cha Ayao Trustee Kayisi Sadala has warned that the association will take action against traditional leaders who facilitate child marriages.
Sadala said some chiefs continue to facilitate early marriages despite Malawi’s legal prohibition of marriage before the age of 18.
He stressed the need for traditional leaders to uphold the law and protect children from practices that threaten their education, welfare and future opportunities.
Child marriage remains a concern because it can force girls out of school, expose them to early pregnancies and limit their economic prospects.
The warning reinforces the importance of cooperation between traditional leaders, parents, communities and other stakeholders in protecting children’s rights and keeping girls in school.
Investing in Girls’ Education
Kalumpha’s donation and the warning against child marriage highlight two important issues affecting girls in Malawi: access to educational support and protection from practices that interrupt their schooling.

While financial assistance can help deserving learners pursue their education, community leadership and enforcement of child-protection laws are also essential to ensuring that girls have the opportunity to complete school and contribute to national development.
Kalumpha’s message is that supporting children’s education is a shared responsibility, and every contribution can help shape Malawi’s future.
