The United Democratic Front (UDF) has declared that Malawi’s political future beyond 2030 could be shaped under the leadership of its president, Atupele Muluzi, describing him as an experienced politician with the vision and international connections needed to transform the country.

In a message published on Facebook, the UDF highlighted Muluzi’s 15 years in Parliament and his experience serving in various ministerial positions as evidence of his political maturity, leadership experience and understanding of government.

The party said Muluzi has also built relationships within Malawi and internationally, arguing that such networks could help create new opportunities for national development.

UDF said Malawi now needs to move away from what it described as a cycle of repeatedly relying on politicians who have failed to deliver meaningful transformation.

“For a long time, this country has continued recycling politicians who have failed to develop Malawi—‘chewing gum politics.’ This is the time to look forward,” the party said.

The UDF further portrayed Muluzi as a leader with vision, diplomatic connections, experience, courage and determination to bring about change in Malawi.

The statement represents a strong attempt by the party to position Muluzi as part of a new political generation as Malawi looks towards the years beyond 2030.

According to UDF, Muluzi’s combination of parliamentary experience, ministerial service and relationships with international partners gives him a foundation from which he can pursue a different development agenda for the country.

The party’s message comes amid growing political discussions about the leadership generation that will shape Malawi’s future beyond the current political cycle.
