President Arthur Peter Mutharika and Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha have been commended for what supporters describe as positive signs of recovery in Malawi’s economy, including the recent stability of the Malawi Kwacha.

The praise comes amid growing public discussion about the direction of the country’s economy and the cost of living, with supporters of the administration pointing to the stability of the local currency as an indication that economic conditions are beginning to improve.

According to the supporters, the Malawi Kwacha has remained relatively stable under the Mutharika administration, raising hopes that the country could gradually move towards greater economic stability.

They have also credited Mutharika and Mwanamvekha with taking steps aimed at addressing some of the economic challenges facing the country.

Mutharika inherited an economy that his supporters describe as being in a severely difficult position following the administration of former President Lazarus Chakwera.

At the time, Malawi was facing significant economic pressures, including shortages of essential commodities, high fertiliser prices and rising costs of basic goods.

The economic difficulties had a direct impact on ordinary Malawians, particularly farmers and low-income households, who were struggling to meet the rising cost of food, agricultural inputs and other necessities.

Fertiliser prices were among the major concerns, with farmers facing difficulties accessing inputs needed to sustain agricultural production. The situation also contributed to wider concerns about food security and household incomes.

Supporters of the current administration argue that restoring stability to the Kwacha is particularly important because prolonged currency depreciation can increase the cost of imported fuel, fertiliser, medicines, machinery and other essential goods.

They say a more stable currency could help create a more predictable economic environment for businesses, investors and households.

Mwanamvekha, who oversees the country’s finances, has a key role in the government’s efforts to strengthen public finances, manage expenditure and support measures aimed at restoring economic confidence.

However, economic recovery remains a process, and Malawians will ultimately judge the administration by whether improvements in macroeconomic indicators translate into tangible changes in their daily lives.

For many households, the most important measures of economic recovery will include affordable food, stable prices, access to fertiliser, reliable fuel supplies, employment opportunities and improved purchasing power.

The government therefore faces the challenge of sustaining currency stability while simultaneously addressing the deeper structural problems that have affected Malawi’s economy for years.

For now, Mutharika’s supporters are welcoming the reported stability of the Kwacha as an encouraging development and are urging the government to maintain its focus on rebuilding the economy and improving living conditions for Malawians.
